On December 28, 2015, 15 U.S. Educators, led by Project Manager, Anne Chu, of Confucius Institute at San Diego State University, left on their journey to China. Among the delegates, there were principals from various school districts in San Diego County, IB teachers and President of the Board, San Diego Unified School District, Dr. Michael McQuary.
Their first stop was Beijing. During their stay in the capital of China, they were greeted warmly by Mr. Yong Zhang, Program Coordinator of the Department of Americas and Oceania Countries and Regions, and Fu Hai Huo, Director of Development and Planning Department when they visited Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban. Mr. Huo gave a detailed presentation on the structure and missions of Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban, Confucius Institutes around the globe and Confucius Classrooms. Many delegates were quite impressed with the information they received. Later, Mr. Zhang led the group on a tour of the Chinese cultural Exploratorium Center; again, the visitors were in awe by the artifacts rich in Chinese culture, and the hands-on interactions they engaged in.
Other must-see sites in Beijing, from the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, to the National Museum of China brought more excitement remarks from everyone.
The delegation group visited Xiamen City as their 2nd stop in China. Xiamen University has been a dedicated supportive partner in many education programs to CI/SDSU. Director Tong Wen Mao of the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters/ Office of Confucius Institute Affairs greeted the guests upon their arrival. They were guided for a tour at the new Xianan campus before attending a series of lectures and forum. President Xinli Zhan hosted the closing ceremony and farewell banquet.
These delegates left China after a 10 day tour on January 06, 2016 from Xiamen with a new recognition and admiration for China, a country so foreign to them before their arrival, yet so similar to their own homeland after they gained knowledge of the culture and people. Their memories full of amazing experiences of Chinese culture will be cherished forever.
